Walking in Her Shoes

To all the wonderful friends, family and business colleagues that have contributed to our Walk in Her Shoes program for CARE Australia 2012.

Thanks to you, we have raised $2,190.00 contributing to the total money raised by CARE Australia participants $532,183.67!

In 2010, my daughter Ginni and I visited three of the many CARE Australia projects that were underway in Cambodia. One of these visits was to Krous Village which recently had a water irrigation system installed by CARE Australia. Traditionally, in this area, villagers only produce one rice harvest a year as the dry season is so extreme, making farming almost impossible. However, with the installation of the new pump and correct irrigation channels Krous Village is able to produce three rice crops per year. The new system not only produces enough food for the village, but also a surplus to sell and provide an income. 2010 was the first year that Krous Village has yielded a harvest in the dry season. The people of the village were incredibly excited to show off their pump. These moments for us were priceless.

The real cost to donate a water pump to a Cambodian village is around $US700. So, small amounts really do make a difference.

And it’s people like you, who make it possible.

Sincerely, thank you.

Walking in Her Shoes

CARE Australia Walking in Her Shoes. Raising funds to help women help themselves.

Day three.

So today was day three and Ginni and I have it all worked out.

Rise at 5.45am. Leave the house by 6.30am. Park at the top of Richmond Avenue, Cremorne 7am and walk to our respective offices in Crows Nest / St Leonards. This equates to approximately 4 kilometres or precisely 5,820 steps, allowing ample extra steps just-in-case. (of what, I am not exactly sure). Of course the same route at the end of the day means we have done well over 10,000 steps by the time we get home in the early evening. My lovely daughter chose this route because it is more interesting than walking the main road. It is true. It’s pretty. And hilly. I am exhausted.

In truth, the walk is pleasant for us, we have perfect conditions (thankfully), a gorgeous outlook, a few gentle hills, conducive weather, little to carry, good walking shoes and comfortable clothing. I cannot imagine walking such a distance with 5 litres of water on my head, in searing heat and without all our creature comforts – iPod not excluded.

I (try to) count my blessings every day. We are privileged in this life. We are lucky enough to make our own choices. Let us share and participate (often) in any small way that we can, to contribute to helping others in crisis.

Thanks so much for those who have supported me.

It’s not too late. Make a small contribution here and now.

Don’t just sit there… get up and do something

Once again it’s time to get out and do something that actually counts towards helping women break free of the poverty cycle. You can sign petitions and make noises but it doesn’t make a lot of difference. In 2010, my daughter and I cycled 380klms to raise funds for CARE Australia. With the support of our friends and colleagues we made over $17,000. We visited Cambodia and met with the people and witnessed the projects that CARE implements. This time, we are walking 8klms a day for 7 days. Perhaps you’d like to sponsor us, or perhaps you’d like to take on the challenge yourself or with friends?
Fur further info visit walkinhershoes.org.au
If you know Sydney, you’d know that from Spit Junction to Crows Nest is a long walk. This is half the distance. About 4k. Ginni and I will park the car and walk to and from the office for 7 days…
The cost to donate a water pump to a village is as little as US$700. And believe me, it changes peoples lives. Why not join us and make a difference?
